Spiritual Drumming
(After Sharing the following is read)
As part of our effort to improve our conscious contact with God through prayer and meditation one way we can approach this sacred communal experience is through music. Music has been widely used in nearly every faith community for the purpose of experiencing the sacredness of God. Since the 12 steps of recovery is simple and basic and participatory, the music we share together should be simple and basic and participatory.
The earliest form of music we experience in life is the heartbeat of our own mother as we are formed in the womb. The simple beat of a heart is primal. It is the sound of the universe. It is the sound of creation. It is the sound of life. Indigenous cultures have been practicing community percussion for thousands of years. Drumming is a time-honored method of healing and uniting people. There is power in drumming alone, but that power multiplies on many simultaneous levels in a group of drummers. The drums draw individual energies together, unifying them into a consolidated force.
We begin with a simple rhythm and we invite you to feel it and respond to it as you like with your own sounds, rhythm, song or dance. Feel free to be moved by the sounds, but also be mindful of the presence of God in the experience.
Following the drumming you are welcome to share from your own experience, strength and hope. Please be mindful of how long you share leaving time for others. Please also only share one time, do not give advice or a sermon, speak for yourself and do not interrupt.
