Conscious Contact
Leader Guide
(Greeter should welcome people at the door and invite them to take an instrument and be seated. If people want to drum lightly until you begin, that is okay. Conversation is welcome until the meeting starts. High priest hands out “Who We Are, Why We are Here” for someone to read.)
Welcome
“Hi everyone my name is ___________________ and I am ______________________ (an alcoholic, a codependent, powerless).
Welcome to Conscious Contact, a spiritual gathering based on the 11th Step. We gather today to pray and to meditate and to improve our conscious contact with God as directed by the 11th step which states, “We sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood God praying only for the knowledge of God’s will for us and the power to carry it out.”
If this is your first time here we thank you for being here and want you to know that you are the most important person in the room because our recovery teaches that the most important spiritual principal of recovery is sharing it with others. Please know you are welcome here whether you are in recovery or not and that you may participate or not participate as you wish. You may share or be quiet. You don’t have to do or say or do anything. We do hope you find this time meaningful and that you will want to keep coming back.
Introduction
At this time let us introduce ourselves by first name only and if you like, share your recovery. I am _________ (and I am a recovering ____________; or simply, “and I am powerless”).
We begin our time here today with prayer and meditation. Please join me in a long moment of silence to reflect on why we are here and to consider those who still suffer. This will be followed by the serenity prayer. “God, Grant us the serenity… “
____________________________ Has been asked to read, “Who We Are, Why We are Here.”
Speaker
_____________________________ Has been invited to read from spiritual writing and to share a topic for this week. After he/she has finished sharing we will spend time in prayer and meditation and after which we will open the room for sharing. (Speaker introduces self, shares a reading and draws out a topic from the reading. Speaks for no more than 10 minutes on the topic.)
___________________________ has been asked to read spiritual drumming.
Spiritual Drumming
(Leader allows drumming to run its course and cuts it off if necessary
to leave enough room for sharing and closing)
Sharing
(After sharing people can share. Silence is fine. When sharing is complete or time is up we conclude)
Closing
(At the conclusion) Thank you all for coming today.
Our next meeting will be ____________________
Would anyone be willing to act as high priest (chair) for the next meeting? ________________________
Would anyone be willing our speaker (share a reading and a topic)? ______________________________
Would anyone be will to act as greeter? ___________________________________________
Please keep coming back.
Now please stand and join hands as we close with the Lord’s prayer.
